From materials to market. The following projects show how LEA80 has shaped brands into viable businesses. Rather than treating natural materials, craftsmanship, production backgrounds, and market as separate elements, LEA80 works by understanding the conditions and possibilities of each, and by shaping the underlying framework of a brand.

PROJECT 01

Vlas Blomme

A project in which the value of linen became the basis for long-term material development and international expansion, while the brand was cultivated across domestic and overseas markets.

Phase
Continuous involvement over 18 years from the brand’s launch / Material development and international expansion
Scope
Material strategy / Material development / Brand direction / Production background development / Development of domestic and international sales foundations / Management of overseas operations

Project
Linen was positioned not simply as a material characteristic, but as the core of the brand itself. Grounded in relationships with Kortrijk, Belgium, one of the key regions for linen production, the project brought together materials, production, products, and market as one continuous process. Over 18 years from the brand’s launch, Satoshi Ishii held executive responsibility for material development and overseas operations, while supporting the brand’s distinctiveness and continuity across domestic and international markets.

Outcome
  • Built a brand framework centered on the value of linen
  • Established the foundation linking material background and market
  • Defined a distinct position in Japan as well as in European and North American markets
  • Responded to the growing importance of sustainability by opening new paths to the market

Recognition

Has received continued recognition from the European linen industry and is regarded as a communicator of linen culture in an international context

PROJECT 02

Building a Cross-Border Brand Model

A project that established a cross-border brand model by combining the strengths of India and Japan.

Phase
Brand launch / Development of a cross-border business model
Scope
Business scheme development / Exploration of production backgrounds / Structuring of the planning system / Market introduction / Development of domestic and international sales foundations

Project
Starting from a point with no existing connections, the project developed production backgrounds in India and built a scheme in which the Indian side served as both brand holder and production base, while the Japanese side led planning, image direction, and market introduction. Beginning with the encounter between Satoshi Ishii and his Indian business partner, it brought together materials, craftsmanship, planning, and market as one integrated structure, and established the framework of a cross-border brand with a showroom in Tokyo.

Outcome

  • Built a rare cross-border brand model in which the Indian side served as both brand holder and production base
  • Connected Japanese planning and market introduction with Indian craftsmanship and production
  • Established a viable business foundation from a starting point with no production background in place
  • Built the basis of a sales structure that included a Tokyo showroom

PROJECT 03

Mid- to Long-Term Strategy Development for a Circular Apparel Brand

A project that helped define the next stage of business development by organizing management, planning, production, and overseas expansion for a brand built on circular systems and a distinct set of values.

Phase
Expansion of an existing business / Mid- to long-term strategy development stage
Scope
Dialogue with the founder / Advice on mid- to long-term business planning / Structuring of the planning system / Expansion of production backgrounds / Development of overseas sales strategy

Project
Working with a brand that operates a circular system including buy-back, repair, and resale, and that is guided by values distinct from those of conventional apparel, LEA80 joined a series of ongoing sessions with the founder to organize business issues and develop a mid- to long-term strategic direction. In addition to expanding production backgrounds through introductions to pattern makers and sewing factories, the work included consideration of overseas sales strategy and accompaniment to international trade shows, helping to build a framework for expanding the market without compromising the brand’s core philosophy.

Outcome

  • Clarified the direction of the business over the mid to long term
  • Expanded the options for planning and production systems
  • Prepared an initial structure for overseas sales
  • Defined a strategic framework that could align the brand’s philosophy with business development

PROJECT 04

Building a Brand by Reframing Traditional Techniques for the Contemporary Market

A project that sought to balance the continuation of craftsmanship with business viability by reconstituting traditional techniques as contemporary real clothing.

Phase
Brand launch / Business-building stage
Scope
Brand direction / Material selection / Production background development / Product planning / Development of sales foundations for domestic and international markets

Project
The brand was built around the idea of bringing sari-based handcraft traditions in India, now in decline, into the present as contemporary textiles. Techniques such as hand spinning and handwoven khadi were connected with natural materials including linen, shaping a direction in which the continuation of tradition could coexist with viability in today’s market. Rather than preserving craft as a static heritage, the project reconstituted it into products that could speak to the present, while also contributing to the continuity of skills and employment.

Outcome

  • Reframed traditional handcraft techniques for the contemporary market
  • Contributed to the continuity of artisans’ employment and the preservation of traditional skills
  • Clarified a brand direction rooted in natural materials
  • Built a foundation for steadily expanding support
